Who remembers Mosquito Coils?

If you grew up in the fifties, sixties, or seventies, you probably remember the venerable mosquito coil. The ever-present mosquito repellent smoke was a standard fixture at drive-in movie theaters, backyard gatherings, and trips to the beach.

So what was in that coil and did it work?

According to Wikipedia, a mosquito coil was made using a dried paste of pyrethrum powder and held at the center of the spiral by a metal stand, allowing the coil to continuously smolder, releasing the mosquito-repellant smoke. The coils are still commonly used in Asia, Africa, South America, Canada and Australia.

Other ingredients commonly used in mosquito coils include:

Allethrin
Esbiothrin
Dimefluthrin
Meperfluthrin
MetoFluthrin
Butylated hydroxytoluene
Piperonyl butoxide
N-Octyl bicycloheptene

Not only are the coils fire hazards, but the smell they emit repels humans as much as mosquitos. Although the ingredients are considered safe for humans, who wants to be around the smell or trust the ingredients?
